The ability to choose your encryption mode is a new feature in Windows If you plan on using your drive with older versions of Windows, or versions of Windows 10 released before mid version or older , select Compatible Mode. Otherwise choose New Encryption Mode this will be the right option for most. Then, click Next. You can choose to either start encryption of your drive or run a BitLocker system check first.

We recommend running the BitLocker system check, as it will ensure that BitLocker can read the Recovery Key before encrypting the drive. BitLocker will restart your computer before encrypting, but you can continue to use it while your drive is encrypting.
